How to clean carpets & upholstery

Sometimes, the spit and polish approach just isn’t enough and a quick whizz round with the vacuum just won’t cut it. So, treat your carpets, upholstery, surfaces and appliances to a real deep clean with steam cleaners and sanitisers that get to the parts other cleaners just can’t reach – they’ll love you for it.

Carpet Cleaning

Step 1

Sometimes a quick vacuum just isn’t quite enough. You can give your carpets a really deep clean with a professional carpet cleaner instead.

Step 2

Use the vacuum first to remove any loose dirt or pile. If you’re sensitive to allergens, use a micro filter vacuum to prevent breathing them in.

Step 3

Fill the carpet cleaner with water and cleaning solution (the machine operating guide will walk you through it) and clean about 1 sqm at a time using overlapping strokes.

Step 4

Lift the cleaning head and release the trigger at the end of each stroke to refill the nozzle with water. Then go over the same area again without squeezing the trigger to suck up the dirty water.

Step 5

Repeat the process until no more water is visible through the transparent head cover.

Step 6

Leave the windows open to help dry the carpets – but don’t turn the heating up as this may dry them too quickly, causing them to shrink.

Upholstery Cleaning

Step 1

It’s not just your carpets that will benefit from a good freshening up. You can give your sofas and soft furnishings a new lease of life too, with an integrated steam-vacuum cleaner.

Step 2

Use your vacuum to remove any surface dirt and dust, then follow the Operating and Safety Guide to get the steam cleaner ready to use. Fit the appropriate attachment for best results on fabric.

Step 3

Move the wand slowly over the fabric, applying light pressure as you go. The machine will leave your furnishings almost dry, but keep people and pets off until everything is completely dry.

Sanitisation

Step 1

A steam cleaner is ideal for blasting germs, bugs and grease from kitchens, bathrooms, ovens and fridges.

Step 2

Set the machine up according to the operating instructions and adjust the steam setting to ‘low’. Move the wand quickly and repeatedly over the surface.

Step 3

Make sure you use the detail nozzle to get in corners and hard-to-reach areas.

Step 4

Use a damp cloth or sponge to wipe down any remaining moisture from wall surfaces.

Top tips

1. To reduce the risk of electric shock, always use an RCD (residual current device) – get expert advice, from HSS, if you’re not sure.

2. Always test a small inconspicuous area of carpet or upholstery before attempting to clean the whole thing.

3. For heavily soiled carpets and stubborn stains, use a pretreatment spotter to remove the worst of the damage.

4. Avoid over-wetting the carpet when you’re cleaning it. It will take longer to dry.

5. If you got a bit carried away with the soap suds and can’t seem to shift them, repeat the process with clean water and they’ll soon subside.

6. Always use the right attachment for the area to be cleaned. You’ll get much better results.
